Long Beach Beach: Season, Clubs and Social Life
Short answer: Long Beach beach is a fine-sand shoreline stretching for approximately 3 km along the İskele coast, staying shallow for a long distance. Part of it is public and free of charge, while other sections are operated by hotels, beach clubs, and residential complexes. The swimming season is roughly from May to October; social life peaks from June to September and becomes noticeably quieter in winter.
This article is for readers considering buying a home or staying long term in Long Beach and looking for the answer to “what is really available on the beach and in the evenings?” We outlined the broader picture of the area in our İskele Long Beach guide; here, we focus only on the beach, the season, and social life, together with their impact on choosing a home.
What kind of beach is Long Beach?
Long Beach beach is an open sandy beach with generally low waves, fine sand, and shallow water extending for a long distance from the shore. This makes it comfortable for families with small children, those learning to swim, and anyone who wants to spend a long time going in and out of the sea.
There is another side to the shallow water: those who enjoy swimming in deep water need to go quite far out from the shore. On windy days, especially in the afternoon, the sea can become cloudy and seaweed may wash up along the shore. For those used to the rocky coves around Girne/Kyrenia, the water clarity may be surprising at first; on the other hand, it is not easy to find this width of sandy beach in Girne/Kyrenia.
Local people often use the name “Long Beach” to refer not only to the shoreline but also to the new İskele settlement that has developed around it. In other words, when someone says “I live in Long Beach,” they may be 100 metres from the beach or 1.5 km away. Be sure to ask about this distinction in listings.
Public beach, beach club, and residential complex beach
There are three different ways to access the sea at Long Beach: free public beach sections, hotels and beach clubs that charge an entrance or sunbed fee, and beach areas open only to residents of a residential complex. Which one you use directly affects your holiday-home budget and daily comfort.
| Option | Fee | Facilities | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public beach sections | Usually free; sunbeds/umbrellas may be charged separately | Lifeguards, showers, kiosks, or restaurants at some points | Those who bring their own umbrella and want a simple beach |
| Hotels and beach clubs | Sunbed or daily entrance fee; use in return for spending is also seen | Bar, restaurant, music, and water sports in some places | Those who want all-day service and those hosting guests |
| Residential complex beach / beach shuttle | Included in the maintenance fee or charged separately; varies by complex | Reserved sunbed area, shuttle service in some complexes | Those living in seafront or nearby residential complexes |
Fees vary significantly by operator and by year; we do not provide figures here. This is a general observation as of October 2026; confirm the current price with the operator. One situation we frequently encounter on site: a complex described to the buyer as “seafront” may in fact have a beach area that is a public sandy beach. This is not a bad thing, but it should not be confused with a promise of a “private beach.”
Season calendar: beach and social life by month
The period for swimming at Long Beach is roughly May to October, while social life is at its liveliest from June to September. Between November and March, most beach clubs close or operate with limited hours; the sandy beach is left to walkers and anglers.
| Period | Sea and beach | Social life |
|---|---|---|
| April–May | The sea is cool; the brave start swimming in May | Businesses are preparing to open; weekends become livelier |
| June–August | The sea is warm; midday hours are very hot | Peak season: beach clubs, live music, busy evenings |
| September–October | The sea is still warm, the beach is calmer | The best time of year for many residents |
| November–March | Swimming is limited, with windy and rainy days | Quiet, limited to year-round venues |
If you are also curious about the winter period, we explain which businesses remain open and how occupied the complexes are in winter in our article on life in Long Beach during the winter months.
Restaurants, cafés, and evening life
Long Beach’s social life largely revolves around the coastal strip and the commercial sections of large residential complexes: beach clubs, café-restaurants, ice cream shops, and on-site bars. Do not expect a high concentration of nightclubs; evenings are mostly about dining, live music, and walks by the sea.
- Coastal strip: Cafés, kiosks, and restaurants line the walking path. In summer, this is the busiest area after sunset.
- Hotels and beach clubs: Some operate as beach businesses during the day and as restaurants and live music venues in the evening.
- On-site commercial areas: Large resort-style complexes include markets, cafés, restaurants, and gyms; some are also open to outside visitors.
- Boğaz harbour: This small harbour, known for its fish restaurants, is a short drive from Long Beach and is a dinner spot for residents. We covered the area separately in our İskele Boğaz guide.
- Gazimağusa/Famagusta: 20–25 minutes away for a wider range of restaurants, cinema, and larger-scale shopping.
An international community is also part of the area’s social fabric. Alongside residents from Türkiye and Turkish Cypriots, buyers from the UK, Russia, and various other countries have created a mixed neighbourhood environment. Social media groups set up by residents are the fastest source of information on topics such as events, lost property, tradesperson recommendations, and which venues are open.
Activities: water sports, walking, day-trip routes
Apart from the beach, the most common activities in Long Beach are coastal walks and cycling, water sports in the summer months, on-site gyms and pools, and weekend day trips to nearby historical and natural routes. The advantage of the area is that most of these routes are less than an hour away.
| Route | Approximate time (by car) | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Boğaz harbour | ~10 min | Fish restaurants, harbour walk |
| Bafra beach | ~15 min | Larger hotel beaches, a different sandy beach |
| Salamis Ancient City | ~20 min | Ancient ruins, pine-tree beach |
| Gazimağusa/Famagusta walled city | 20–25 min | Historic city, cafés, dinner |
| Kantara Castle | ~35–45 min | Mountain road, views, walking |
| Karpaz, Altınkum | ~1 hour 15 min and over | Quiet beaches, national park, wild donkeys |
Times are approximate values in normal traffic; they may increase on summer weekends. Water sports (such as jet ski, banana boat, canoe, SUP) are generally offered through hotels and beach clubs, are limited to the season, and depend on wind conditions.
Beach safety for families with children
Long Beach’s shallow sea is a major advantage for families with children, but shallow water does not mean there is no risk. On windy days, currents and waves can increase, and lifeguards are not available at every point. The practical advice we give families on site is as follows:
- Find out the section and hours where lifeguards are on duty on your first day; swim there with children if possible.
- Do not stay on the beach without shade during midday hours (approximately 11.00–16.00); the summer sun is very strong on the sand.
- Pay attention to the temperature of the sand; beach shoes are useful for small children.
- Follow wind and wave warnings; keep children close to the shore on days when the sea becomes cloudy.
- If you use a residential complex beach, know in advance where the first aid kit and the nearest health centre are located.
How should you evaluate the beach and social life when buying a home?
When choosing a home, distance to the beach, the way the beach is used, and year-round social facilities are at least as important as the apartment price. There may be a price difference between two apartments located 300 metres and 1.5 km from the sea; however, the difference in daily life is often greater than the price difference.
A simple example: assume a two-person household living in a complex 1.5 km from the sea goes to a beach club 4 days a week throughout the summer (16 weeks) and spends a total of 1.500 TL each time on two sunbeds and a light lunch. This amounts to 16 × 4 × 1.500 = 96.000 TL for the season; at an exchange rate of 1 £ ≈ 64 TL, approximately 1.500 £. In a complex within walking distance of the beach, where the beach shuttle is included in the maintenance fee, a significant part of this expense may disappear. The figures are entirely hypothetical; recalculate according to your own usage.
Questions to ask during a home viewing:
- What is the complex’s relationship with the beach: public sandy beach, reserved area, or shuttle service?
- Are the beach shuttle and pool maintenance included in the maintenance fee, and do they operate only in the summer months?
- Do the café, market, and gym within the complex remain open in winter?
- How close is a beach club with evening music to your apartment; is there a noise issue?
- Is a new project planned on the empty plot in front of you?

Frequently asked questions
Is Long Beach beach free?
Part of the sandy beach is public, and entering the sea is free of charge. In sections operated by hotels and beach clubs, fees may be charged for sunbeds, umbrellas, or daily entrance; some businesses offer use in return for spending. Areas reserved for residents of a complex may be included in the maintenance fee or charged separately. Current fees must be confirmed with the operator each year.
When is the sea suitable for swimming in Long Beach?
The swimming season runs roughly from mid-May to the end of October. The sea is at its warmest between July and September; September and October are residents’ favourites, when the beach is calmer and the sea is still warm. Although some people enter the water between November and April, the sea can be cool, and the weather can be windy and rainy.
Is Long Beach suitable for families with children?
Yes, this is one of the area’s strongest advantages. The sand is fine, the sea stays shallow for a long distance from the shore, and waves are low on most days. Even so, there are not lifeguards at every point, and the sea can change on windy days. Choosing sections with lifeguards, avoiding the midday heat, and keeping children in sight are the basic rules.
Is there nightlife in Long Beach?
In the summer months, there is lively evening life with beach clubs, restaurants with live music, and on-site bars. However, you should not expect a major nightclub scene; evenings are mostly spent dining, listening to music, and walking along the coast. Between November and March, the number of open venues decreases noticeably.
Which other beaches are close to Long Beach?
To the north, the hotel beaches of Bafra are approximately 15 minutes away, while the beaches around Salamis Ancient City to the south are approximately 20 minutes away. Those looking for quieter and more natural sandy beaches can go to Altınkum in Karpaz at the weekend; the drive takes over an hour. Boğaz harbour is known more for its fish restaurants than for its beach.
How close to the beach should a home be when buying?
There is no definite rule, but if you plan to use the beach daily, walking distance (up to approximately 500 metres) significantly improves quality of life. If you plan to rent the property out, short-term tenants attach more importance to proximity to the beach. In more distant complexes, ask whether there is a beach shuttle and whether it also operates in winter.
