Hospital, School and Market in İskele: Guide

Short answer: In İskele, daily needs for a hospital, school and market can be met locally: Long Beach has markets, pharmacies and a private healthcare center, while İskele center has public schools and government offices. For a full-service hospital, high school and college options, and major shopping, you need to go to Gazimağusa, 20–25 minutes away.

This article is for families, retirees and remote workers who are considering settling in İskele or spending a long part of the year here. We introduced the region in general in our İskele Long Beach guide; here, we focus only on social infrastructure—in other words, the question of hospitals, schools and markets in İskele: “where do I go if I get sick, which school do I enroll my child in, where do I do the weekly shopping?”

Is social infrastructure in İskele generally sufficient?

It is sufficient for daily life, but not for services requiring specialist facilities. İskele’s social infrastructure should be considered in three layers: on-site services, İskele town center and Gazimağusa.

Most large residential complexes in Long Beach have a market, café and sometimes a pharmacy or beauty salon within the site. Along the coastal road, these are joined by supermarkets, restaurants and small businesses. İskele town center, on the other hand, is a more local hub with the municipality, healthcare center, public schools, bank branches and local tradespeople. For hospitals, high school options, universities and major shopping, people go to Gazimağusa.

Healthcare: Is there a hospital in İskele?

As of October 2026, there is no full-service public hospital in İskele district; the nearest comprehensive hospital services are in Gazimağusa. The district has a public healthcare center providing primary care and private healthcare facilities.

  • Private healthcare center in Long Beach: Long Beach Medical Center, which provides specialist doctor consultations and basic diagnostic services in the region, opened around 2023 according to a promotional news article in the local press. Ask in advance which specialties have doctors available and whether there is night service.
  • İskele healthcare center: A public primary healthcare service is provided in the district center. Confirm working hours and which services are offered on site.
  • Gazimağusa: Gazimağusa State Hospital and private hospitals in the city are the main addresses in the region for emergency services, inpatient treatment and most specialist fields.
  • Pharmacy: There are pharmacies in Long Beach and İskele center; follow the on-duty pharmacy list for nights and public holidays.

In emergencies in Northern Cyprus (TRNC), call 112. Practical note: buyers with chronic conditions or those requiring regular dialysis, oncology or cardiology follow-up should consider travel to and from Gazimağusa as a weekly routine. For some specialist fields, it may also be necessary to go to Lefkoşa.

Health insurance and residence permit connection

For buyers with foreign status, private health insurance both makes costs more predictable and may be required for some applications. The residence permit application also includes a health check process; check the current requirements on the Immigration Department page and in our TRNC residence permit guide.

Schools: options for families with children

There are public primary and middle schools in İskele center and the surrounding villages; high school, private college and English-medium school options are mainly in Gazimağusa. In the TRNC, no tuition fee is charged at public schools.

For families coming from Turkey, public schools feel familiar in terms of curriculum and language. For families looking for English-medium education or international programs, options are concentrated in private schools in Gazimağusa and Lefkoşa; their fees vary significantly from school to school and are updated every year.

The main deciding factor in school choice is often the school bus service. Some private schools provide a bus service to the Long Beach route, while others do not. If there is no bus service, the 20–25-minute trip to Gazimağusa twice a day, in the morning and afternoon, determines the parent’s daily schedule.

  1. Contact target schools at least one term before moving; ask about availability and registration dates.
  2. Get written confirmation of whether the bus route stops at your residential complex and the bus fee.
  3. Prepare equivalency and transfer documents in advance for students coming from Turkey.
  4. Find out whether a residence or residence permit document is required for registration.
  5. Compare the school’s summer holiday and mid-term holiday calendar with your own travel plans.

On the university side, several universities, especially Eastern Mediterranean University, are in Gazimağusa. For families with university students, İskele is a quieter option than the city center but requires daily commuting.

Shopping: markets, bazaars and major purchases

Daily and weekly grocery shopping can be done comfortably in İskele; for furniture, white goods, electronics and a wide product range, you need to go to Gazimağusa or Lefkoşa.

On-site markets in Long Beach are convenient, but their prices are generally slightly higher. Large supermarkets on the coastal road and in İskele center offer a more balanced variety and pricing. For fresh vegetables, fruit and local products such as halloumi, town and village markets are a good option; ask the municipality or local tradespeople which days they are held.

When setting up a home, people often go to Gazimağusa and Lefkoşa frequently during the first few weeks: curtains, bedding, small household appliances, sometimes white goods. This need decreases in furnished apartments. One of the questions most frequently received by the Akol Global after-sales team is where to find reliable tradespeople for missing items and renovations after delivery. The after-sales services team can provide guidance on this.

Sample calculation: cost of regular trips to Gazimağusa

Let’s assume a round trip from Long Beach to Gazimağusa is approximately 45–50 km. If you go twice a week, that makes about 400 km per month. With a vehicle that consumes 7 liters per 100 km, this means about 28 liters of fuel; at the latest official price of 61,12 TL/L for 95 octane petrol, this is approximately 1.711 TL per month. Fuel prices change frequently; recalculate using the current price.

Official procedures, banking and daily services

Municipal matters, banking and bill payments are largely handled in İskele center or online; for title deed, residence and some official applications, appointments are made with the relevant offices.

  • Municipality: Local obligations such as property tax, waste and environmental cleaning tax are under İskele Municipality.
  • Bank: There are bank branches and ATMs in İskele center; ATMs are also available on the coastal road. Identity and proof of address are required for account opening procedures.
  • Electricity and water: Subscription and fault procedures are handled through local units. Let us remind you that a permanent connection cannot be made in a new apartment before taxes and fees are paid.
  • Residence applications: These are handled through the online portal and appointment system; the appointment place and date should be planned in advance.
  • Cargo and post: Cargo from Turkey is often collected from branches in Gazimağusa; ask the cargo company about delivery to the residential complex.

What should you consider based on social infrastructure when choosing a home?

In terms of social infrastructure, the right home is the one that lets your household reach the place it visits most often by the shortest route. For a retired couple, this may be the healthcare center and market; for a family with a school-age child, it may be the school bus route.

Even within İskele, the choice makes a difference. The Long Beach coastline offers ready on-site services and a beach, but the town and schools are reached by car. Homes close to İskele center are closer to local life, schools and government offices, but are a few kilometers from the sea. We compared the district’s sub-regions in our article on buying a home in İskele. For example, when considering a project such as Seafront Resort, ask about the distance not only to the site itself but also to the nearest market, pharmacy and school bus stop.

Final suggestion: before buying, spend a weekday in the area as if you were living in that home for a full day. Be there at the school bus time in the morning, at pharmacy and market hours in the afternoon, and in the evening when the restaurants are open. Shortcomings that do not appear in the brochure become clear in that single day.
