TRNC Private School Fees 2026: Colleges & University

Short answer: State schools in Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are free and provide education in Turkish. TRNC private school fees for 2026-2027 are approximately 435,000–720,000 TL per year at local colleges and in the 7,200–11,500 £ range at British curriculum schools. Annual university tuition fees vary by department from 183,750 TL to 1.64 million TL (as of October 2026; please verify).

This article is prepared for families considering moving to the island with their children and for those with university-age children. We set out the differences between state schools, local private colleges and British schools, the items that are later added to the invoice, and the annual calculation for a family with two children, with figures. If you are wondering about the overall family budget, you can first read our article on the cost of living in Northern Cyprus 2026.

School options in the TRNC: three main routes

In the TRNC, a family chooses one of three routes for their child: a free state school, a local private college priced in TL, or a British curriculum school priced in sterling. What determines the choice is often the language of education before the budget.

  • State schools: They provide education in Turkish and there is no tuition fee. The curriculum is close to the system in Turkey; for a child coming from Turkey, it is the easiest option to adapt to.
  • Local private colleges: They provide mainly Turkish or bilingual education, and some also offer GCE O-Level and A-Level programs at high school level. Fees are in TL.
  • British curriculum schools: Education is in English and prepares students for IGCSE and A-Level exams. Fees are announced in sterling; they are preferred by foreign families and those aiming for university abroad.

Most schools are concentrated in Lefkoşa, Girne and Gazimağusa. If you live in İskele, Esentepe or Karpaz, a school bus or daily car use becomes part of the budget. For this reason, add distance to school to your list when looking for a home.

Are state schools really free?

Yes, no tuition fee is paid at state schools; however, it cannot be said that they are completely cost-free. Items such as uniforms, stationery, parent-teacher association contributions, trips and school transport are borne by the parent. These are far lower than private school costs, but it is still necessary to set aside a preparation budget of a few thousand lira at the beginning of the year.

For registration, the identity documents of the child and parent, address information, and transfer or report card documents from the previous school are requested. Children of families with a residence permit can register at state schools; we explained the residence process in our TRNC residence permit guide. Ask the relevant school administration or the Ministry of National Education which school your area is assigned to and the current document list.

The issue most frequently asked by families coming from Turkey is equivalency. Documents obtained from the school in Turkey are generally sufficient for registration in the TRNC, but if you are transferring in the middle of the year, clarify in advance which grade the child will be placed in.

TRNC private school fees 2026-2027

According to the early registration lists announced in May 2026, TRNC private school fees are between 435,000–720,000 TL per year at local colleges and 7,200–11,500 £ at British schools. The figures included in the compilation by İnkılâpçı newspaper dated 15 May 2026 are below.

The NEU group prices in the table are based on cash payment and early registration conditions valid until 31 May 2026; VAT, lunch, books, health insurance and one set of uniforms are included. Schools announced that they would update prices according to exchange rates and inflation as of June. In other words, a family registering in October 2026 may receive an offer above these figures; ask for a written fee list.

In our main cost of living article, we used a 3,500–7,500 € range for private schools based on 2026 compilations. The lists announced by the schools themselves are significantly above this; we recommend using the figures in this table as the basis when budgeting.

Hidden items added to the school bill

The most common mistake when comparing TRNC private school fees is looking only at the advertised figure. The actual amount paid at a private school is usually higher than the announced annual fee, because school transport, uniforms, exam and activity fees are billed separately. Some schools include meals and books in the fee, while others do not. When comparing, the same scope should be placed side by side.

Before registration, ask the school for the following items in writing:

  1. Tuition fee and payment plan: Cash discount rate, number of instalments, and price difference for instalment payments.
  2. Currency and exchange rate clause: At schools priced in sterling, is the exchange rate on the payment day applied, or a fixed rate?
  3. Right to increase during the year: Can the school update the fee in the middle of the term? The issue parents complain about most is interim increases in October-November.
  4. Meals, books, uniforms: Are they included in the fee or charged separately?
  5. School transport: Is there a service to the area where you live, and what is the annual fee?
  6. Exam fees: IGCSE and A-Level exam fees are usually paid separately to the exam board.
  7. Deposit and refund conditions: If the child leaves the school, how are the deposit and the amount paid in advance refunded?
  8. Sibling discount: Is it applied, and at what rate?

For additional items such as school transport, uniforms, stationery and exams, it is realistic to set aside an amount starting from a few hundred sterling per year on top of the announced fee. Exam periods at British schools increase this amount.

Example calculation: family with two children

The annual private school expense of a family with two children in primary school is approximately 1 million TL at a local college and around 16,200–17,200 £ at a British school, according to the May 2026 lists. The calculation below was made at an exchange rate of 1 £ ≈ 64 TL and does not include additional items.

Scenario (2 children, primary school)AnnualDivided monthly
State schoolNo tuition fee; uniforms, stationery, school transportA few thousand TL
Local college (2 × 501,088 TL)1,002,176 TL (≈15,660 £)≈83,500 TL
British school (2 × 8,100–8,600 £)16,200–17,200 £ (≈1.04–1.10 million TL)≈86,400–91,700 TL

To put these figures into perspective: in the TRNC, the net minimum wage is 61,677 TL as of July 2026. At this scale, TRNC private school fees become the largest item in the family budget after rent. Sending two children to private school means a monthly burden above one minimum wage. You can find the detailed income table in our article on the TRNC minimum wage and salaries 2026.

For families with sterling or euro income, the cost of a British school is less affected by the exchange rate. Families living on TL income and wanting to raise their child according to the system in Turkey mostly choose between state schools and local colleges.

Nursery and kindergarten costs

Private nursery and kindergarten fees are in the 435,000–450,000 TL per year range within colleges, and 7,200–7,500 £ at British schools. At this level, half-day and full-day options significantly change the price.

There are also neighbourhood nurseries outside colleges; their fees may be lower than colleges, but standards and scope vary. When visiting, ask about the teacher-child ratio, where the food is prepared, and the closing time. For working parents, the closing time is often more decisive than the fee.

University fees 2026-2027

For universities in the TRNC, 2026-2027 tuition fees start from 183,750 TL per year for undergraduate programs and rise to 1.64 million TL at medical faculties. According to Education System’s news dated 23 July 2026, some examples are as follows (including VAT):

UniversityAnnual fee rangeNote
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU)532,318–1,042,482 TLThe highest figure is medicine
Near East University (NEU)660,490–1,644,745 TLMedicine 1,644,745 TL

University of Girne603,600–1,566,423 TLMedicine at the top
Cyprus Aydın University409,500–546,000 TL—

In addition to tuition fees, many universities charge registration, service or activity fees; these additional items vary between 24,000 TL and 73,500 TL. Scholarships mostly cover only tuition fees; dormitory, transport and meals remain the student’s responsibility. Before making a preference, be sure to ask whether the scholarship is valid in the preparatory class and at which grade point average it is terminated.

University students also directly affect the rental market on the island. We discussed how student rents are shaped in Gazimağusa and Lefkoşa, region by region, in our article on TRNC rental prices 2026.

Where should the home be when choosing a school?

The location of the school is as important as TRNC private school fees. The school choice should be made before the home choice, because schools in the TRNC are concentrated in a few cities and daily travel time determines family life. Lefkoşa and Girne are the two cities with the greatest variety of schools. Gazimağusa has state schools, colleges and EMU.

Families living around İskele and Long Beach generally use schools in Gazimağusa. Families who want to live in a residential complex in this region look at projects in Gazimağusa such as Caddemm Residence or around the Salamis road. Among the questions received from families moving to the island, the route of the school bus ranks near the top for the Akol Global after-sales team; finding out from the school which complexes the service stops at before looking for a home prevents surprises later.

Why are British schools priced in sterling?

British curriculum schools employ foreign teachers, and a significant portion of exam and material expenses is paid in foreign currency; therefore, they set their fees in sterling. Be sure to ask which day’s exchange rate will be applied in the contract.

Registration or service fees, dormitory or rent, meals and transport are added to this. Scholarships generally cover only tuition fees; review their conditions before making your choice.

Can there be an interim increase in school fees?

Some schools can update prices during the academic year due to high inflation and exchange rate movements; parents particularly complain about interim increases in the October-November period. Cash payment generally reduces this risk. In the registration contract, see in writing whether there is a right to increase during the year and, if so, how it will be calculated.
